The tragic car accident that radically altered the life of the victim occurred in 2007. The group home residents decided to attend a Halloween party the night of November 2, 2007. Upon driving home from the party, the driver lost control of the van, which caused a fatal car accident. Of the five residents and three staff members in the van, two residents were ejected.
One of the residents in the motor vehicle accident, who was ejected from the vehicle, was killed. Mr. Hiller's client was the other group home resident who was ejected. He suffered catastrophic injuries as a result of the car crash.
He experienced a spinal injury that resulted in paralysis for the first eight months after the accident and then it took another 14 months of extensive rehabilitation and physical therapy before he could walk again. As a result of the accident, he was forced to endure painful surgeries, including a level 5 spinal fusion and a level 3 laminectomy, which is another spinal surgery. In total, Mr. Hiller's client spent nine months in three separate hospitals.
The victim's life will never be the same. It is expected that he will endure significant arthritis as a result of the spinal surgeries. Additional surgeries will also be necessary to repair the adjacent segments of his spine. He now cannot stand upright when walking and has difficulty walking for long periods of time. The large-sum verdict won on behalf of the victim will allow the him to pay for his medical expenses and future surgeries.
